5-day Marangu Kilimanjaro climb
Trip Overview
Starting at Marangu Gate, the route follows a well-trodden path, making it one of the most popular and accessible routes on Kilimanjaro. Each day, you’ll hike through distinct ecological zones, with opportunities to acclimatize to the increasing altitude. The itinerary includes overnights at mountain huts, providing shelter and comfort along the way. The summit attempt begins at midnight on the fourth day, offering a challenging but rewarding experience as you ascend to Uhuru Peak in time to witness a spectacular sunrise. The climb concludes with a descent back through the various ecosystems you’ve journeyed through, leaving you with unforgettable memories of this iconic trek.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Your adventure begins with a drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate (1,870 meters), where you’ll complete registration formalities. The hike starts through the lush rainforest, with towering trees and vibrant greenery surrounding you. After about 4-5 hours of trekking, you reach Mandara Hut (2,720 meters) for your first overnight stay. If time permits, a short side trek to Maundi Crater offers excellent views of Northern Tanzania and Kenya.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
After breakfast, you’ll continue through the forest, transitioning to the moorland zone, characterized by heather and scattered trees. The trail becomes steeper as you approach Horombo Hut (3,720 meters), which you’ll reach after 5-6 hours of trekking. This hut offers magnificent views of Mawenzi and Kibo, two of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic peaks. You’ll spend the night here, preparing for the next day’s climb.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
To better acclimatize, you’ll spend an extra day at Horombo Hut. A short hike to Zebra Rocks (about 4,000 meters) is recommended, which helps your body adjust to the altitude and increases your chances of summiting. This day also allows you to rest and soak in the stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. Return to Horombo Hut for your overnight stay.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Today’s trek takes you across the “Saddle,” a barren, lunar-like landscape between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The trail gradually ascends to Kibo Hut (4,700 meters), which you’ll reach after 5-7 hours. After arriving, you’ll rest early, as the summit attempt begins around midnight. The hut is basic, and the air is thin, so sleep may be difficult, but conserving energy is crucial.
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
The final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters, begins at midnight. The climb is steep and challenging, with the most demanding section being the last stretch up to Gilman’s Point (5,685 meters) on the crater rim. From there, it’s a gradual incline to Uhuru Peak, which you’ll reach after 6-8 hours. After celebrating your achievement at the summit, you’ll descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend your last night on the mountain.
