Trip Overview
7-day Lemosho Kilimanjaro Climb offers a scenic and gradual ascent, making it ideal for acclimatization. The journey begins at Londorossi Gate, trekking through the lush rainforest to Mti Mkubwa Camp. Over the following days, you’ll traverse the beautiful Shira Plateau, climb the challenging Barranco Wall, and pass through diverse landscapes, including heather, moorland, and alpine desert.
Acclimatization is emphasized with a day at Lava Tower, followed by a descent to Barranco Camp. The summit attempt begins at midnight from Barafu Camp, reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) after a challenging climb. After savoring the achievement, you’ll descend to Mweka Camp and finally exit the mountain at Mweka Gate.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Londorossi Gate
Upon arriving in Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be transferred to the Londorossi Gate, where you’ll complete the necessary park registration and prepare for the trek. After a brief orientation, you’ll drive to the starting point of the Lemosho Route at the trailhead. Following a short hike to the first camp, you’ll settle in at Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp) at around 2,650 meters (8,700 feet). This day is designed to help you acclimate to the altitude and start the adventure in a relaxed manner.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Today begins with a trek through the lush rainforest and moorland zones, ascending gently to Shira 1 Camp at approximately 3,600 meters (11,800 feet). The hike is relatively moderate, allowing you to enjoy the diverse vegetation and panoramic views as you gain elevation. This camp is strategically positioned to aid acclimatization and prepare for the higher altitudes ahead.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
On this day, you’ll continue your trek across the Shira Plateau, heading towards Shira 2 Camp at around 3,850 meters (12,600 feet). The hike involves a gradual ascent with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including the iconic Kilimanjaro summit. As you approach the camp, you’ll traverse a combination of rocky terrain and gentle slopes, helping your body adjust to the thinning air.
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp
The trek today takes you from Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp, situated at about 3,960 meters (13,000 feet). This leg of the journey involves crossing the Lava Tower and then descending slightly into the Barranco Valley. The varying altitude helps with acclimatization while offering stunning vistas of the volcanic landscapes and the formidable Barranco Wall. The camp is set in a picturesque location surrounded by the rugged beauty of the mountain.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
From Barranco Camp, you’ll tackle the Barranco Wall, a challenging but rewarding ascent that leads to the Karanga Valley. The climb to Karanga Camp, situated at 4,000 meters (13,100 feet), offers spectacular views and a chance to rest and acclimate. The trek involves a mix of steep climbs and traversing through alpine desert terrain, providing a varied and stimulating hiking experience.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
The journey continues from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp, located at approximately 4,640 meters (15,200 feet). This day is crucial for acclimatization as you hike through the alpine desert, gradually approaching the base camp. Barafu Camp is where you’ll rest and prepare for the summit attempt. The night will be spent in anticipation of the final push to the peak.
Day 7: Summit Attempt and Descent
The summit attempt begins in the early hours of the morning, with a challenging ascent through the night to reach the peak of Kilimanjaro. You’ll ascend via the Stella Point and, if conditions allow, continue to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), the highest point on the mountain. After reaching the summit and taking in the awe-inspiring views, you’ll begin the descent back to Barafu Camp for a well-deserved rest. The trek involves a steep descent, so be prepared for a long day of hiking.
