8 Days Machame Kilimanjaro Climb
Trip Overview
The 8-day Machame Kilimanjaro Climb offers a comprehensive and well-paced journey to the summit of Africa’s highest peak. The adventure begins with your arrival in Moshi, where you’ll prepare for the climb. Starting from Machame Gate, the trek takes you through diverse landscapes, beginning with lush rainforests and transitioning into moorlands and alpine deserts.
Each day is designed to maximize acclimatization, with significant points like the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, and the challenging Barranco Wall. The journey steadily builds toward the final push from Barafu Camp, leading to a midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak, the summit of Kilimanjaro at 5,895 meters. The descent is equally rewarding, allowing you to reflect on your achievement as you make your way back to Moshi.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. This day is for rest and final preparations. Meet your guide for a briefing on the upcoming trek, check your gear, and ensure everything is in order. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 2: Moshi to Machame Gate to Machame Camp
After breakfast, drive from Moshi to the Machame Gate, the starting point of the climb. After registration, begin the trek through the lush rainforest, where you’ll witness an array of local flora and fauna. The trail gradually ascends, leading you to Machame Camp at 2,835 meters. This first day is relatively short but important for acclimatization. Overnight at Machame Camp.
Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Today’s trek begins with a steep ascent out of the rainforest and into the moorland zone. The path continues along a ridge, offering stunning views of Kibo and the surrounding valleys. After crossing several streams, you’ll reach Shira Plateau, where you’ll camp at Shira Camp at 3,750 meters. The landscape here is more open, providing panoramic vistas of the mountain.
Day 4: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
This is a longer and more challenging day, designed for acclimatization. You’ll hike eastward, crossing ridges and valleys toward the Lava Tower at 4,630 meters, where you’ll take a break for lunch. Afterward, descend to Barranco Camp at 3,950 meters. This descent helps your body adjust to the altitude. The camp is located in a valley below the impressive Barranco Wall, providing a dramatic setting for the night.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Begin the day by tackling the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb that rewards you with breathtaking views. Once at the top, follow a series of ridges and valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp at 4,035 meters. This relatively short day is vital for acclimatization and prepares you for the higher altitudes ahead.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
The trail continues up the ridge, with the landscape becoming increasingly barren as you approach the alpine desert. The route merges with the Mweka Trail as you ascend to Barafu Camp at 4,640 meters. The camp is situated on a rocky, exposed ridge, where you’ll rest and have an early dinner before your summit attempt. Overnight at Barafu Camp.
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Around midnight, start the final push to the summit. The path is steep and requires determination as you ascend through the darkness. After reaching Stella Point at 5,739 meters, continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, begin your descent, first back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp at 3,100 meters. This long day is both physically and mentally demanding, but incredibly rewarding.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi
After breakfast, continue your descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi for a well-deserved rest at your hotel. Spend the evening reflecting on your incredible journey and celebrating your achievement.
